The GU15 team travelled to High Wycombe on Wednesday 8th February to play Wycombe Abbey Girls in round 2 of the ESR National School’s Competition. In fantastic form, they won the fixture and secured themselves a place in the national finals next month.
Emma Banks played a cracking match and in game 3 came out all guns blazing. However, it wasn’t quite enough to beat her very determined opponent. Maya Hellin at string 4, had a terrific battle winning the first 2 games and then losing the next 2. The final game was neck a neck the whole way through and at 10 all, Maya’s opponent tripped and fell causing a long injury break. However, Maya kept cool, remained focused and came back on to take the penultimate point and then played a fantastic cross court lob to win 12-10 and take the match. Millie Banks also had a real nail biter, quickly taking the first 2 games but then losing the next 2. Her opponent managed to pull it out of the bag in the last game and despite Millie’s awesome new backhand, she just beat Millie 11-9 in the 5th. Ellis Miller and Alicja Emmans both secured their matches 3-0 against formidable opponents in a bid to win the place in the finals in Nottingham in March. Wycombe Abbey kindly provided the celebratory donuts. Thank you to Millie and Emma’s dad (Ben Banks), for kindly helping to provide extra transport to the fixture.
