Both our teams in Division IV of the County Junior Leagues were competing on Sunday 13 January: the “A” team at Hunts County and the “B” team at Comberton.
Comberton 5A had a pretty successful time, with team captain Matt Peer leading the line with two excellent 3-0 wins. Our no. 2 string, Millie Banks, who had stepped in as a late replacement, also played very well, winning one match 3-0 and picking up a game in her other match against strong opposition. No. 3 string Ben Barker hasn’t yet had much experience of county league squash and wasn’t able to pick up a game despite coming close in one of his matches.
Meanwhile, back at Comberton, 5B, who were all new to the county leagues, also put on a good display. Ellis Miller at no. 1 had tough opposition: one match against a big-hitting lad and the other against a nationally-ranked girl, but she never looked like giving up and served well throughout. Henry McArdle at no. 2 lost his opening match 3-0 and was 2-0 down in his second match, only to fight back heroically and pull off a 3-2 win in the closest match of the afternoon! Tristan Beecroft at no. 3 played very well to win his first match 3-0, but struggled in his second match against a much taller opponent.
Overall we can be pleased with the level of effort and performance shown by our youngest squads.
