Winter Leagues & SquashLevels

The third winter leagues have been published and run until the 16th of February. We are up to 9 leagues this time – great to see so many people wanting to take part.

The Comberton Boxes can be found here and you can also see the results from last month.

If you haven’t used SquashLevels before then you can claim your profile and join (with a free membership tier). Please let me know if you have any questions with this.

According to SquashLevels the club player of the month for December (with the greatest % increase in level) is Connor Harmer with 15.9%, with Isaac Broughton (12.6%) coming in second.

Team Matches

The Winter inter-club leagues have reached the half way point. The 1st team plays home matches on a Wednesday, and the 2nd team on a Thursday, both starting from 7:00 pm. If you want to see some good quality squash then spectators would be very welcome!

Fixtures can be seen in the club calendar here.

The 1st team are currently in 2nd place, just 3 points behind Ely. Just one team gets automatic promotion so the top of the table clash, away on 29th January could be a title decider.

The 2nd team are also performing well and are third in the table, with only Newmarket and Cambridge University above them. Two sides get promotion so this could also come down to the wire!

You can track their progress here (for the 1st Team) and here (for the 2nd Team).

We have entered 3 teams for the Cup Competition this year, in a revised format of just 4 players per team. The first match for Comberton III will take place later this month.

Ray Scrivens Christmas Tournament – Results

The Club Favourite Ray Scrivens Tournament took place on Sunday 15th December and had a great range of players participate, from 1st team superstars to 3 people from our beginners group. Everyone had great fun and got to know some new people.

Our winners were Team B (Tom Parker, James Hustwayte and Sonu Farid) and the highest individual point scorer (not on the winning team) was Keith Maloney. All 4 received Christmas Chocolates for their efforts.

The more important aspect is raising money for the Junior Section – we managed to raise £136 this year!

Below are a selection of photos – I do apologise for what I was wearing.

County Closed – 6th to 8th December 2024

The County Closed tournament took place in early January 2024 at Hunts County Squash Club. Yet again Comberton had a large number of entries (but with scope to have even more next year).

The results involving Comberton players were:

  • Mixed ‘A’ Grade – Connor Harmer, Tom Parker, Nathan Taylor & Santiago Uribe Lewis all took part and made good progress in the plate competition. James Powley, the overall plate winner, knocked out Tom, Connor and Nathan in consecutive rounds
  • Mixed ‘B’ Grade – Connor & Tom were joined by Isaac and Graham Broughton for this one – all winning their first two matches to set up 2 all-Comberton semifinals. Connor ended up beating Nathan in the final.
  • Women’s O50 – Sue Crossley took part and came second
  • Men’s O5% – Santiago took part and came second
  • A special mention for Nathan who gained the most points across the entire event and was presented with a pint after his last match

Junior Inter County fixtures

A number of our junior players took part in the Inter County regional fixtures towards the end of last year:

  • Boys U15 – Danny Waller played and won 3 out of his 4 games. The team overall mirrored that result and qualified for the finals in Sheffield at the end of March
  • Boys U17 – Connor Harmer, Rufus Jeffery and Edward Hole all player for the team, losing to a very strong Warwickshire A team and just being squeezed out against Lincolnshire

Club Development

We now have a kitchenette, which is not quite functional yet. We hope to have the plumbing completed soon and then we’ll be able to provide hot drinks during Saturday mornings and other club events. The Committee will discuss what to do next, for furniture in particular, during their next meeting.

Please do let us know if you have any ideas or suggestions.

Club WhatsApp Group

The Club has a WhatsApp group, which is a great way to keep up to date with news (a little quicker than these newsletters), looks for people to play etc.

If you would like to join then please use the QR code below.

Club Calendar

We have recently introduced a club calendar, available via the club website, so that the various events at the club can be seen. We’ll also include other relevant events at local clubs, such as for junior tournaments etc.

This can be accessed at the following link.

Club Kit Store

Buy branded training shirts, polo shirts, tracksuits, hoodies and much more at the online Club Kit Store.   As we spend at the store, the club earns credits, which we’ll use for buying junior kit.  There’s more colours coming soon, so check back!

Buy Now – it’s for everyone not just the teams!
