Our Second Team enjoyed very mixed fortunes playing at Abbotsley. With Hunts County unable to raise a team it was left to ourselves and our hosts to play a league fixture followed by a succession of ladder challenges.
Harvey Jacklin, one of our most rapidly improving players, disposed of the Abbotsley no. 3 without too much trouble, but Mark Dancy at 2 found Sam Hewson a tough prospect and went down in straight games despite accumulating a respectable points tally in each game. Our no. 1, Henry Prime, took the first game beyond the distance, eventually losing 12-10, but thereafter couldn’t offer a serious threat to the impressive young Harry Hennessy. So it was overall victory to Abbotsley by 9 points to 3, and with it the Division title.
Henry, perhaps not quite yet back to full fitness after a spell out of the game, could offer little resistance against Sam Hewson in their ladder challenge matches, but Mark and Harvey fared rather better, Mark defeating the Abbotsley no. 3, Henry Parker, 3-1, and Harvey coming close to causing a sensation when he pushed Harry Hennessy to five games, ending up with a 3-2 defeat.
