February 3rd saw our youngest junior team making their first trip to Peterborough, where we were playing the host team and Abbotsley in a Division IV fixture.
Peterborough, who have only rejoined the Cambs Junior Leagues this season after some years without a junior section, proved to have some useful players. Their no. 3 was way too strong for Ben Barker, but Millie Banks at 2 put up a terrific fight, eventually losing 11-8 in the fifth. Matt Peer at 1 took the first game by a narrow margin but then got steadily more on top to record a 3-0 victory. Overall result: Peterborough 9 points, Comberton 5.
Abbotsley were able to field only two players, so Ben had a walkover at 3 (and played well to defeat a Peterborough reserve player 3-0 in a ladder challenge match). Millie was determined to get full value for her match fee by taking this match, too, to five games, but this time she held on for a 3-2 win! Matt ended up with a comfortable victory despite a wobble in the second game, to give us a good overall win: Comberton 12 points, Abbotsley 3.
