All About the Volley
This term, Saturday Juniors are working on improving their volley
skills. Analysis of their games has shown they actually go for a
volley quite often – up to 20% of their shots 🙂 But they tend to make
an error for about 50% of these 🙁
The volley is a crucial part of any player’s game. So our sessions
will focus on making opportunities to attack and control the game with
volley shots.
The cartoon here shows what to aim for in a good controlled volley
shot. The high overhead volley is often tempting but often a better
shot comes from waiting to let the ball drop to eye-level or below.
Reaching high means the racket tends to cut down on the ball –
limiting your targets. A flatter swing can be used to direct the ball
to any corner on the court. Repeating volley practice is a good thing
to do when you have time on your own on court.
