2-8pm 8th January 2017

I am running the London Marathon on 23 April 2017 in aid of Diabetes UK because I would like to see a cure to this terrible condition one day.

I am inspired by my son, Ben, whom many of you knew when he was a member of Comberton Squash. He has Type 1 diabetes which he contracted at the age of 11. This destroyed his body’s ability to make insulin, so he gives himself regular injections of insulin throughout the day. There is no cure and unless he maintains his glucose levels, he risks some of the long-term conditions which affect the heart, eyes, kidneys and feet. Ben has been able to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, in spite of his condition.

Type 2 diabetes is far more common (90%) and about 4m people now have it in the UK and many more than that have it undiagnosed. Type 2 usually develops later in life and is associated with risk factors such as weight, diet, exercise and lifestyle.

I would like to support Diabetes UK to find a cure one day. Diabetes UK gives support in the form of education, help lines, awareness and medical research. As an example of the advances in medical research, Ben now uses an insulin pump which enables him to control his glucose levels much more accurately.

To raise awareness, I have decided rather rashly to hold a “squashathon” from 2-8pm on Sunday 8 January 2017, where I will be on court for six hours and would love to play as many people in the club as possible – doubles and singles.

So please sign up on the sheet at the club or email me: neil.stutchbury@btinternet.com. I would hope you would then consider donating to Diabetes UK on my JustGiving page.
