The difficulties involved in finding a suitable time for our top juniors to play County Junior League matches meant that we eventually settled on a Thursday afternoon in Half Term to play the second and last Premier Division fixture at Cambridge Squash Club.
Comberton had a slight lead over Hunts County from the first fixture, with Cambridge lying in third place, but our hopes of retaining the Premier Division trophy were dealt a blow when our no. 1, Jeremy Harris, pulled out to take part in an event at Bishop’s Stortford. Marcus Wing came in at 3, with David Snelling and Josh Harland-Mears moving up to 1 and 2 respectively.
Hunts County had only two players, but the real threat turned out to be from Cambridge SC! Marcus’ walkover against Hunts County gave us 3 useful points, and Josh played well to get a game at 2, while David produced the day’s heroic comeback, recovering from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2. Overall score: Comberton 10 points, Hunts County 5.
Marcus fought well in his first game against Cambridge, but lost his way after narrowly dropping the first game and went down 3-0. Josh was always in contention but couldn’t quite close out any of the three games, while David had a torrid time trying to contain ex-Comberton player Laurence Temple. The result was a 12-0 drubbing at the hands of Cambridge, who have come from behind to take the title this season … but we’ll be back next season!
