The Club Tournament finals were played last Sunday 17th May following the initial rounds which had been running for the last few weeks. The Tournament was arranged by Club Captain Alistair Maclean.
The first finals were for some Junior competitions, with the preliminary rounds being played during Junior Squash on a Saturday morning.
The Girls U16 Final was played between Aramelia Protheroe and Alicja Emmans. Aramelia proved to be the stronger player from the start forcing Alicja behind. The first game was won at 11-4. Alicja pushed harder in the second game taking the lead early on but could not match the lengths from Aramelia to lose 11-7. The 3rd game started off with Aramelia on top again but Alicja battled hard to even the score at 6-6. Aramelia then surged ahead to reach match ball at 10-7. Alicja played her best squash to regain the serve and then take it all the way to win 12-10.The 4th game was a bit of a see saw. Aramelia got to 8-2 and then Alicja managed to get more into the game ending up with Aramelia at 10-7 with match ball. Alicja then played some great rallies to even the score at 10-10. It looked as though it was going to a 5th game. However Aramelia played two good serves and won out at 12-10. A great match to watch.
The Girls Plate final was played between Millie Banks and Sarah Snelling. Millie proved too strong for Sarah. After an even start with Sarah leading 5-4 Millie surged ahead with good serving and forcing shots to take the game 11-6. Sarah had no answer to Millie in the second game and following good serving and consistency from Millie to win 15-0. The last game was also dominated by Millie wining through at 11-2. A great win for Millie.
The boys U16 Final was between Harry Harland-Mears and Ed Wheeler. Despite the hard hitting from Harry, Ed had the upper hand throughout the match winning comfortably 11-3, 11-6, 11-4. Great squash from Ed.
The Vets Final Was between Alistair Maclean and Jason Lane. Alistair stated off strongly getting to 5-0. This lead was then maintained as the game swung to and fro fro Alistair to win at 15-8.The second game was even until 5-5 when Jason squeezed a few points ahead. These he maintained right up to the end of the game at 15-12. In the next game Jason was now well on top and lead at 9-5. He then soared ahead to win at 15-6. Jason was now well on top and continued to win through at 15-7.
The Vintage Final was between Alistair Maclean and Chris Golding. This was a close battle from beginning to end. Alistair managed to get in front in the first game leading eventually 13-8. Chris played some superb rallies to claw back a couple of point but then lost to one of Alistair’s short cross court shots for game ball. Chris managed to get the serve back but then lost out finally at 15-11. The second game was more in Chris’s favour. He got in front and started to push Alistair around the court. He won eventually at 15-7. In the 3rd game Alistair had a long winning streak to 9-2 and then it was nip and tuck til Alistair won 15-9. The 4th Game was extremely even. Chris was determined to come through and Alistair retrieved and retrieved right up to 14-14. It looked as though Chris had got there but he then lost out on his serve and Alistair took the last point for the match at 16-14. A great battle of squash from the “old boys”.
The Main Plate was between Keith Maloney and Ollie Thorne. In the first game Ollie got off to a good start getting to 6-2. He managed to keep a lead throughout to win at 15-11. In the second game it was evens stevens throughout right up to 14-14 and then 15-15. Keith however got the last two crucial points to win 17-15. The 3rd game was another close encounter with Ollie having a surge to get 10-7 in front. Keith got back some of the points but Ollie won through at 15-12.
The Handicap Competition was between Ollie Thorne and Stuart Elmes. This was strongly contended and after Ollie won the first game 15-10 it looked as though Stuart was going to win the second for a final decider leading 14-11. Ollie fought back and with one or two lucky hits got back to 14-14. This was sudden death which Ollie managed yo win for a 2-0 victory.
The Ladies Final was played between Junior Casey Miller and Debra Stephenson. Debra got off to a good start playing some strong squash against Casey. However as Casey warmed up and got her eye i the game turned and she forged through a strong winner at 15-8. The second game was much more even with both ladies playing good lengths and forcing shots. However Casey took the reins at 11-8 to win through at 15-10. The third game started off with a strong lead by Casey of 6-0. Debra managed to get back into the game but couldn’t quite make up that deficit finally losing out at 15-11. Casey triumphed 3-0.
The final game was the Club final between recent senior Jeremy ?? and James Leakey. Jeremy proved just too strong for James. Despite all the efforts he put in Jeremy just retrieved and retrieved and generally forced the pace of the game. The first was won by Jeremy at 15-5. The second saw James outclassed at 15-0. The third was much the same but James rallied superbly on a few occasions but still couldn’t make much impact losing out 15-7. Jeremy’s fist senior club title.
At the end of all the finals, presentations were made to all winners and runners-up, with the presentations being orchestrated by Club Chairman Mike Macnamee, and the trophies being handed out by Alistair Maclean.
The last trophy, the Sally Woods trophy presented to a person who has contributed significantly to the Club over the years was presented by Mike Macnamee to Alistair Maclean who was truly surprised and humbled by the presentation. Most worthily received for all his past and ongoing efforts as Club Captain, running the men’s team, looking after the box leagues, and of course organising this end of season Club Tournament.
