New leagues

The next Winter leagues have been published. They are available in the Club or can be found here on SquashLevels.

Based on the results of the last leagues, and some matches since, we can reveal the Comberton most improved player of the month (as per SquashLevels) – Debra Stephenson with a mighty 16.9% improvement!

Ray Scrivens Festive Fun Tournament

The annual fun Christmas tournament, held to raise funds for Juniors in memory of our former Coach, Ray Scrivens, took place on Sunday 14th December.

The format and rules will were (loosely) based on the US National Squash League (https://nslsport.com/nsl-rules/), and can be best described as semi-organised chaos.

Everybody who took part had a great deal of fun and we raised over £250 for the junior section.

We’ll try and make things even more complicated for next year.

Tri Club Tournament

Another plug for the 1st edition of a tournament that our own Graham Wesson is organising. Very much worth entering as there are different grade levels so people will get good matches.

Please see the poster below and talk to Graham W if you want more details.

Comberton Cup

Thanks to Graham Wesson for organising for a national series of graded tournaments to make its way to Comberton in January. We had 32 players, across 4 grades, competing at the club, filling the place. We even had the ladies World number 32, Lucy Turmel, as the number 1 seed in the A grade.

We had a great many compliments about the courts, social area and general friendliness of the club and members both playing and spectating.

You can see some photos from the day etc. on Instagram here.

I think we had 7 club players taking part and congratulations (as well as large bars of chocolate) go:

  • Tom Parker – B Grade winner
  • Graham Broughton – C Grade winner

Pencil in the date – we expect the tournament to be run again on 24th January.

Junior Inter-county

A number of our juniors have been involved in action for the County in the recent round of Inter-county fixtures.

The County will be represented by BU15, BU19, GU11 teams during the finals weekend towards the end of March, in Sheffield. We’ll feature the results of the teams, and especially the Comberton players in a future newsletter.

Team results

Our three league teams (and four for the cups) have been having some close (and some not so close) matches recently, but it’s all looking promising. The leagues can be found here and the cups can be found here. A summary is:

  • The 1st team are sitting fourth in Div 1 and seemingly very secure from relegation. Doing very well in their first season in the division and beating all expectation.
  • The 2nd team are 6th in the 2nd Division, one place above the relegation zone. This is also their first season in this division, and the quality of opposition has been really high. A 20-3 victory against the 7th placed team last week has really helped. They have a key fixture against Peterborough at home on Thursday.
  • The 3rd team are 4th in Division 3 and playing well. Promotion seems slightly out of reach but if a couple of key fixtures go their way then you never know…
  • The Ladies team are 4th and really enjoying playing together as a team.

In the Cup competition the Ladies won their first fixture, the mixed teams are all involved in either the main draw or plate semifinals.

Please do consider coming down and supporting the teams when they play at home.

Given where we are in the year there is a great match taking place between Father Christmas and the Easter Bunny, to see where the year goes next. My money is on Easter.

Club WhatsApp Group

The Club has a WhatsApp group, which is a great way to keep up to date with news (a little quicker than these newsletters), look for people to play etc.
