Comberton had two teams in action for our home fixture on February 24: 4A comprising three boys, and 4B comprising four girls, with two girls sharing the no. 1 spot.
In the head-to-head our girls came out on top, only Orlando Hodgson flying the flag for the lads with a 3-0 win over Kate Czylok at no. 1. Haydn Davies at 2 was overwhelmed by the consistent serving of Casey Miller, while Nathan Ginn at 3 put up a strong fight against Izzy Broadbent, eventually succumbing 3-1. So it ended 9 points to 4 in favour of our girls.
Comberton 4A then faced King’s College School’s First Team, and once again Orlando produced a polished performance, even though he lost a very close match 3-1 against the County U11 champion. Haydn and Nathan both struggled in their matches (though Nathan pushed his opponent all the way in the opening game), losing 3-0. Overall victory to King’s by 12 points to 1. It should be noted, though, that both Haydn and Nathan were making their debut for the club and were up against more experienced opponents. We can be fairly sure that they’ll be less nervous and more successful when they play for Comberton next season!
Our girls’ team, 4B, were up against by far the strongest team in the division – Fenland, and neither Izzy nor Casey was able to secure a game, though both put up good resistance. Charlotte Davies, coming in at no. 1, played very well to take a game off her opponent, and was a serious threat to him throughout the match. Overall result: Fenland 12 points, Comberton 1.
