Since my last blog we have played 3 matches; vs Melbourn, Stamford and Hunts Co.
- Melbourn, just above us in the league, is one of two teams against whom we had a realistic chance of victory and so it was vital to pull out all the stops in order to stay clear ahead of Abbotsley. And what a match it proved to be! Les Stockley, at 5, lost the 1st game but fought back to win 3-1. Guy Weatherhead, Jason Lane and Alistair Maclean all survived nailbiting 5 set matches with 3-2 victories leaving only Paul Naylor to crash out 0-3 to Aiden Hird who was in inspirational form on the night. 17 points to 10 – a good result!
- Stamford. Missing Paul and Les and also a man short, we had few expectations against a potentially strong side. And so it proved with Jason getting our only game, I managed only one point against an in-form Spencer Beresford and Guy and Olly Thorne both coming away empty handed. So 20 – 1 to Stamford. Many thanks to Olly for travelling with us to do battle.
- Hunts Co. Much the same situation as with Stamford but this time we were missing both Guy and Les. Martyn Symmons and David Snelling stepped into the breach and we all had good, but ultimately fruitless, matches with Paul the pick of the bunch losing narrowly 3-2. Both Martyn and Jason picked up a game whilst David threatened but couldn’t quite bag a game. I was just thankful not to be crushed by James Powley. 20 – 4 to them.
Lees I (away) and Lees II (home) are the final two matches.
