Comberton 3rd Team ended their Cambs Junior League season at home, up against Abbotsley 2 and Ramsey Abbey.
Our two opponents turned out to be quite a contrast in strength. Ramsey Abbey School have only three players in the County leagues, but they are all strong competitors in this division, and our team had an uphill battle against them. The best showing came from our no. 3, Alex Pinches, who was playing in his first fixture for Comberton. After losing his first two games Alex dug in well, took the next two games, and looked set for victory, only to be pipped 11-9 in the deciding game after a late comeback by his opponent. Adam Peer at 2 had been moved up to this division from the one below during the season, and was also still coming back from injury. After a competitive opening game he began to fade, with stamina being an issue as the match progressed, and eventually lost 3-0. Sam Hicks at no. 1 had a very strong opponent and struggled to make much headway, also losing 3-0. Overall result: Ramsey 12 points, Comberton 2 points.
Things went much better for us against Abbotsley, however! Alex opened our account with a comfortable 3-0 win, Adam played a consistent match to record a similar score, and Sam looked a different player as he maintained good line and length to stay well on top to complete a whitewash. Overall result: Comberton – 12, Abbotsley – 0.
